Summary
The State of Colorado led the way with partnerships between Apple and Google to launch critical COVID-19 detection technology across the state. One of these technological investments was in a COVID-19 positive test result reporting that could be done natively on an Apple or Android device.
Having experienced several issues with the functionality being widely adopted, I was approached to scrub in to help launch new self-report functionality. Previously self-reporting required a code from a public health official which could takes days to receive. This new functionality would allow users to report their positive at-home test results, speeding up the public’s ability to respond to COVID-19 exposure.
My role was the lead designer. I worked to do the first mobile prototyping, user testing, and iteration for this new functionality. I partnered with product managers and designers at Apple and Google as well as many in-state developers to ship this functionality with a tight turnaround of 3 weeks.
Process
First, I interviewed people who had used the functionality as it stood, developed an understanding of user’s expectations, and utilized the RITE method to iterate and test new designs to release this functionality as soon as possible.
